Mergent Online just announced it has significantly expanded its biographies of corporate executives. The profiles now include a list of board memberships and affiliations, past employment history, and education. It looks like the data is gathered by mining the web because after each profile there is a statement that says, "This summary was automatically compiled using x number of sources:" followed by excerps from web sites like the SEC, CBS Marketwatch, Crain's, and the company's own website. I looked at the profile of Leon Black who is on the board of Sirius Satellite Radio. Some of the excerpts were from web sites as old as 2000 and 2001. I wonder how the data is vetted and how accurate the profile is?
To see these web bios, first select a company, then from the "company details" menu open "executives." Next to the name of each officer is an information icon marked "web bio."
