Roving
As much as possible, I will be scheduling three librarians at the reference desk this semester. I encourage everyone to become "roving librarians" again. Please take the opportunity to walk the floors, make yourself visible, and ask users if they need help.
I'm not sure if I have the best strategy for announcing myself to users when I rove, but it seems to respect the privacy of the users as they peck away at keyboards. I wander up to an area where there are PCs for the public to use and announce to no one in particular, "Does anyone need help?" That works in areas where there are computers, but is there a way to announce yourself elsewhere without disturbing students reading at carrels and tables? If we just wander the public seating areas, will anyone stop us to ask for help? Perhaps, then, we should concentrate our roving efforts to the places where students are using public PCs. Anyone agree? Disagree?
If you are a staff member of the library and you work at the reference desk, you are likely already signed up as an author on this blog and should receive emails automatically with every new post as they are published. Please be aware that if you receive a post via email and you reply to it, it won't be visible on the blog itself. If you'd like to reply to a post, please add a comment to the post itself.
